First premiered in 1992, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice quickly established itself as one of Jim Cartwright's most popular and enduring plays. Set in a working-class northern town, it combines comedy, music and drama to tell the story of a gifted but painfully shy young woman known only as Little Voice. Living under the shadow of her domineering mother Mari, she retreats into a private world of records and memories, finding confidence through the voices of the great singers she admires.
The piece gained an even wider audience through the acclaimed 1998 film adaptation, which featured memorable performances from Jane Horrocks, Brenda Blethyn and Michael Caine.
This new production stars Francesca Mills in the title role and is directed by Robert Hastie. Also on the cast are Paul Chuckle as Mr Boo and Jill Halfpenny as Mari.
